Make-A-Wish Foundation

Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation's mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish® experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities.

The dream of 7-year-old Chris Greicius to be a police officer led to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Though he was critically ill with leukemia, Chris was treated to a day as a police officer in an effort to lift the boy’s spirits. A mere week before he died, the Arizona Department of Public Safety indulged his desire with a helicopter ride, tour of the city in a police cruiser, and a custom-made police uniform. Chris was also sworn in as the first honorary DPS patrolman in state history.

The ability to help a child see his dream come true transformed from these humble beginnings in 1980 into the global phenomenon it is today, reaching more than 144,000 children around the world.

A network of more than 25,000 volunteers enable the Make-A-Wish Foundation to serve children with life-threatening medical conditions. Volunteers serve as wish granters, fundraisers, special events assistants and in numerous other capacities.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 (juvenile) diabetes research worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is a disease which strikes children suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.

Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.16 billion to diabetes research, including more than $137 million in FY2007. In FY2007, the Foundation funded 700 centers, grants and fellowships in 20 countries.

American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. The group’s goal is to help prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. With more than two million volunteers nationwide, the American Cancer Society is one of the oldest and largest voluntary health agencies in the United States.

With chartered divisions throughout the country and over 3,400 local offices, the American Cancer Society (ACS) is committed to fighting cancer through balanced programs of research, education, patient service, advocacy, and rehabilitation.

San Diego County Humane Society

The San Diego Humane Society has been providing vital services to the animals and people of San Diego County since 1880. The largest humane society in the county, the SDHS helps by:

• Sheltering and adopting animals;
• Providing public training classes and delivering positive reinforcement behavior training for both adoptable and owned animals;
• Investigating animal cruelty and neglect;
• Providing adult and youth education programs;
• Sharing animals through Pet-Assisted Therapy; and
• Rescuing animals in emergency situations

A private nonprofit organization that receives no public or government funding, the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA is supported solely by contributions, grants, bequests, investments, proceeds from its retail outlets and some fees for service.
